Universal Texture of Quark and Lepton Mass Matrices

Against the conventional picture that the mass matrix forms in the quark sectors will take somewhat different structures from those in the lepton sectors, a possibility that all the mass matrices of quarks and leptons have the same form as in the neutrinos is investigated. For the lepton sectors, the model leads to a nearly bimaximal mixing with the prediction |U_{e3}|^2=m_e/2m_\mu=0.0024 and \tan^2\theta_{sol} \simeq m_{\nu 1}/m_{\nu 2}, and so on. For the quark sectors, it can lead to reasonable values of the CKM mixing matrix and masses: |V_{us}|\simeq \sqrt{m_d/m_s}, |V_{ub}| \simeq |V_{cb}|\sqrt{m_u/m_c}, |V_{td}| \simeq |V_{cb}|\cdot |V_{us}|, and so on.Comment: 9 pages, Latex, talk given at The 4th workshop on "Neutrino Oscillations and their Origin" (NOON2003) (Kanazawa, Japan, 10--14 Feb. 2002). Integrated face detection, tracking, and pose estimation

This paper presents a proposal of an integrated method for face detection, tracking, and head pose estimation. We use the de-facto Viola-Jones method for face and face part detection. We adopt affine motion model estimation as a tracking method. The combination enables efficient detection around the search area limited by tracking. Moreover, it reduces false detection because of the consistent processing with earlier results. In addition, the method re-initializes the position and size of the face and face parts in every frame. That initialization immediately corrects tracking jitter. The head pose is estimated using coordinates of both eyes and a mouth relative to the nose as the origin in the coordinate system. The computational cost is low because it uses only those three points. Experimental results show accurate estimation of the head pose. The average error is 6.50 deg in yaw angle, and 7.65 deg in pitch angle. © 2012 IEEE

Vehicle detection and tracking with affine motion segmentation in stereo video

This paper proposes a novel method for vehicle detection and tracking based on stereo vision, motion analysis, and road detection. Combining stereo vision with motion analysis makes object detection more appropriate than each individual method. Object tracking with motion estimation, which follows the next object detection starting with an initial solution given by the tracking, improves detection accuracy. Road detection with motion segmentation, considering a parallax in stereo vision as a motion, enables on-road vehicle and obstacle detection. All elements constructing the proposed method are founded commonly on affine motion segmentation. Software and hardware implementations become efficient because their parts share the common principal procedure. Simulation results show the proposed method successfully detects and tracks vehicles on moving background in a complicated scene of downtown. © 2011 IEEE

Prediction of fetal acidemia in placental abruption

BACKGROUND: To determine the major predictive factors for fetal acidemia in placental abruption. METHODS: A retrospective review of pregnancies with placental abruption was performed using a logistic regression model. Fetal acidemia was defined as a pH of less than 7.0 in umbilical artery. The severe abruption score, which was derived from a linear discriminant function, was calculated to determine the probability of fetal acidemia. RESULTS: Fetal acidemia was seen in 43 survivors (43/222, 19%). A logistic regression model showed bradycardia (OR (odds ratio) 50.34, 95% CI 11.07 – 228.93), and late decelerations (OR 15.13, 3.05 – 74.97), but not abnormal ultrasonographic findings were to be associated with the occurrence of fetal acidemia. The severe abruption score was calculated for the occurrence of fetal acidemia, using 6 items including vaginal bleeding, gestational age, abdominal pain, abnormal ultrasonographic finding, late decelerations, and bradycardia. CONCLUSIONS: An abnormal FHR pattern, especially bradycardia is the most significant risk factor in placental abruption predicting fetal acidemia, regardless of the presence of abnormal ultrasonographic findings or gestational age

Meteor Radar Study of Ionospheric Wind at Kyoto

    Get PDF
This paper describes the results of meteor radar observations which have been carried out at Kyoto University since December, 1977. The radar, a coherent pulse doppler radar with a transmitting frequency of 31.57 MHz and a nominal peak power of 10 kW, is able to detect wind fields at meteor regions of 80-110 km. The solar semidiurnal tide generally dominates the wind oscillations at these heights, while a diurnal tide of comparable magnitude reveals itself in a less regular manner. Some anomalies in the amplitude and phase characteristics of the tides are shown, which might be related to a possible interaction with winds and waves, or to some disturbed conditions in the earth's atmosphere. Also planetary scale waves such as quasi-2-day oscillations and resonantly magnified gravity-mode waves have also been found there. Hence, the meteor radar, together with its cooperation with other observations, will helps us understand the dynamical process of atmospheric waves on a global scale

A Case of Colonic Metastasis of Breast Cancer Positive for Estrogen Receptor

    Get PDF
This is the first report of a metastatic colon cancer of breast cancer positive for estrogen receptor. A 56-year-old woman who had undergone standard radical mastectomy due to right breast cancer was suffered from left lower abdominal pain. Barium enema and proctoscopy revealed a narrowing at the rectum and the descending colon. Needle biopsy of the rectum revealed Group 5. The resection of the left colon, the rectum and the ovaries were performed. Foci were macroscopically present at the rectum, the sigmoid colon and the descending colon. Histological examination revealed that colonic foci were metastases from the breast cancer of lobular carcinoma. The colonic preparation was positive for estrogen receptor

    Prospect of the Zee model

    Get PDF
The Zee model is one of promising models of neutrino mass generation mechanism. However, the original Zee model is not on the framework of the ground unification scenario, and moreover, it is recently pointed out that the predicted value of sin22θsolar\sin^2 2\theta_{solar} must be satisfied the relation sin22θsolar>0.99\sin^2 2\theta_{solar} > 0.99. We discuss whether possible GUT versions of the Zee model can be free from the severe constraint sin22θsolar>0.99\sin^2 2\theta_{solar} >0.99 or not. We will conclude that the following two models are promising: an R-parity violating SUSY GUT model and an SO(10) model with a 126-plet scalar.Comment: 3 pages, no figure, Latex, presented at KEKTC5(Nov. 2001), to be publised in the proceeding
